The Art of Language or the Language of Art

Hi All,

This week we studied "Discourse Analysis". Here's your homework: You have 2 weeks to complete your assignment.
1. Visit an art museum (Istanbul Modern Art Museum, Sakıp Sabancı Museum, Pera Art Museum, etc.)
2. Tell us which exhibition you visited. Analyze the artists' language. Try to explain how the artists are expressing the meaning without using a verbal or non-verbal language. Are they any successful and how they succeed to express the meanings they have in their mind? Exemplify by artists' and their works' names.
3. Post your comments to our blogger.

i went to istanbul modern. there were several exhibitions. although i am not very knowledgeable in the field of art all those work of art meant something to me, i had an oinion, whether right or wrong, about their creators' feelings or beliefs. art is really a good weapon in order to convey not only your feelings but also beliefs and thoughts. with colours or shapes, an artist can express lots of things. but, probably the thing that distinguishes the language of art from just uttering words is that each person can get different meanings from the same picture. the ones that i enjoyed most were the ones made by people of my nationality, because we have the same culture, therefore more common feelings, values and thoughts. that is why i thing i understood their works most. for example in 'inkılap yolunda, sait faik izer makes a composition what we experienced during the foundation of the turkish republic. there is a woman pulling off her vein, soldiers fighting with turbaned men, a girl with a book in her hand, a woman with turkish flag, atatürk showing the destination to the young, and the date 1923 is wriiten at the bottom on a stone. all these would mean nothing to someone knowing nothing about our process during those years, or all those figures would not mean much thing if they they were seperately drawen, but in the composition they mean lots of things and that is the discourse meaning, i think. may be colors or shaped don't mean anything on their own, but they do in a composition, they become symbols of different thoughts, values. this symbolism is used very succesfully in the pictures of murat germen in köprü6 exhibition. he exhibits photos of just names of shops or some ads. on one side there are the ones that reminds us the culture of east, on the other sides there are ones reminding the west culture, and beneath this, he tries to tell about the dilemma in between east and west in istanbul, it gives a social message to us with only names of some shops.

Today, Çağrı and Muhammed went to ISTANBUL MODERN . In there, there are many exhibitions of artists. some of them are very impressive. In self-portrait section Ergin Inan and Bedri Rahmi Eyuboglu's self-portraits influenced us.
we especially cares about Ergin Inan's artwork that has different insects on different part of the face of artist like on his ear, nose, mounth. Also his face is in a palm whose fingers are attached. On fingers there are varied shapes.
According to us, in this artwork both insects and the location of them on his face imply something us. we mean putting the insects on his ears and mounth, he tells that he is closed to outside. he wants to live alone. He can neither
hear nor speak due to insects. also putting these insects on his nose and brain, he tells that his tought is imposed by other
creatures. he can not think independently. At the same time, painting this face in a palm shows that he is not free. he is always
under the controll of the others. Although painter Inan does not use even a word, we can write this article. Meanwhile; the painter
use the non-verbal language successfully. even if we have enogh time we can write a novella.

I visited 10th International İstanbul biennial. The thema of the biennial was “ not only possible , but also necessary , optimism in the age of global war” The exibition was in İstanbul Modern Art Museum. I mostly focused on eigth works , because they influenced me much more than the others . There is a serie of works created largely by the use of mass media. ( photography, paintings, music, video, letters and perception ) They draw the attention of the mass on the destruction of human perception by mass media tricks , but at the same time they are so obvious , because they are representative of our everyday life , but “we look without seeing”. In the biennial we see the absurdity of the perception and the conception of war and human's relation respectively.

Artist: Yan Rei Ming
Work: “From worldwide to international”

“From worldwide to international “ presents the eight people who have been in charge of general secretaryship since teh establishment of UN. We see the pictures of them surrounded by those of children coming from all over the world each with a different expression and none specified either according to their origins or whether they are victims or not . These thirty portraits that make up teh work , remind one of the two actual problems namely the management of the world wide conflicts and economical inequalities in the age of globalism.

Artist: Allora-Cazladisla :
“There is more than one way to skin a sheep”

The tulum represents what may be most ancient piping instrument in the world. Generally played in the small mountains of Kackar in teh Eastern Black Sea Region especially among Hemsin and Laz people. Thsi folk wind instrument whose fundamental shape is derived from carcass of a sheep plays a key role in the transition of these various ancestral languages , cultures , oral traditions and music histories. Before it played a key role as an instrument of war. Like so many other places confronting new realities of globalization , the Kackar region the different challenges of preserving its traditional heritage while finding ways to sustain and develop itself . This film shows a Kackar tulum player using the musical instrument to fill up the flat tire of an old bycicle.
The artist express his feeling by the use of non-verbal language. we see only images of buses, cars and besides bycicle and the tulum and hear their voices. the act of the actor , his use of teh tulum to fill up reminds us the nature beside teh culture. The artist arrive to the meaning by merely use of non-verbal language and its force on the subconcious of the audience at teh age of the global war is located in between the local and global . The sound of the local instrument resonates in teh conscious of teh audience . we are invited to pass borders between not only teh local and global, but also between the cultutal and natural.

Artist: Fernando Sanchez Castillo

“ Rich Cat die of heart attack in Chicago”

Brazil, 1968 a coup d'état is impossible to announce because censorship has silenced the newspapers. They hit teh streets with teh impossibility of explaining what is going on. On the contrary they pick news like “ “ Rich Cat die of heart attack in Chicago”
The video uses this absurd pharese as title that describes tha various images of strange and confused riots. On teh scene we see first the head of a sculpture on teh back of a car stringed and then , there is a gropup of men and animal walking after the head. The artist uses the non-verbal language , it is done purposefully. he tries to create from the absurd a sense. the action seems so difficult and confused , but infact it is due to a “non-action” . The meaning stem from this non-reaction of human being. İt is as if the artist tries to explainb the silence in a noisy way via the use of rituels and matches. The concious of teh audience is reflected on scene in order to reach his subconscious.

Artist: Rainer Ganahl
“Silenced Voices”

The photos of 21 journalistes death place and a bycicle tour around them. ( Abdi İpekci etc) in İstanbul. The artist uses semiotic signs and non -verbal language. Even the name of the work is representative. The aim is to be the voice of the “voice and the action “. But the reaction is represented on the contrary by the “ silence”.

Artist: Renée Green
“Code =Survey”

“Our ways of perceiving tend to be associative and reference when we think of as familiar, especielly when we venture into an unknown area”

Artist: Banu Cennetoğlu
“Scary Asian Men”

The piece hints ironically at teh metaphorical threat of Turks on the threshold of Europe . You see in teh room some photos of Turkish men and a star wandering around the room . It is the 26th star of UE.

Artist : Ken LAM
“House of Realization “

“We encountered the house of realization , we withnessed the body, the wighing skies, the man layered earth the seventy thousand veils, we found in the body, the night and the day , the planets , the words inscribed on teh Holy Tablets. the hillthe Moses climbed, the temple and İsrafil's trumpet , we observed in the body Torah, Psalms, Gospel , Quran . what these books have to say , we found in the body. Everyubody says these words of YUNUS are true. Truth is everywhere you want it. We found it all within the body.”
YUNUS EMRE

“House of realization “ is an architectural installation consisting of a darkened chamber envolepped by three corridors. the first corridor is comprised od a mirror reflecting a 20 century Turkish poem of the sufi poet Yunes Emre. Printed bac, kwards on the wall facing the mirror , teh poem deals with teh relationship between subjectivity and the world as expreienced by the body. the corridors follow. At the end of each is a full lenght mirror. At the end of the final corridor is the entrance to a darkened chamber. It is here what visitors are presented with both the Turkish text on the wall and those in the midst of reading the text on the mirrored surface. Tehe visitors are unaware of their visibility to those located in the other side of the mirror. İt is only after walking the legth of the three corridors entering the darkened chamber that visitors realise that they have been withnessed by another.

Artist: Hamra Abbas
“Lessons of Love”
There are many lessons which can be learnt from “ Lessons of Love” by Hamra Abbas. First and foremost that in each amorous relationship , no matter how smooth, content and pleadurable it is , there lays a dormant element of danger, of break up, destruction and violence. Hamra probes that possibility in her large swords and other weapons , in the traditional imagery that consists of two figures in teh act of love making , teh presence of arms , in the bodies during intimate position , reflects the other side of love as well , it denotes the present situation of our world in which not only love but every sentiment and activity is threatened through terror.

one more istanbul modern visitor...
firstly ı want to say that this is a fascinating museum!ı loved so much!after viziting this museum,ı realized that there wasn't any work witout a secret message behind the visible side of them.all of them left an effect on me.but how?without speaking or writing..
light or dark, near or far, abstract or concrete..doesn't matter..none of them is 'coincidental!'all the colors selected carefully and all the shapes represents something..but not the same thing.ı see something but my friend can see something different maybe.because the viewer is invited to reality that the artists sense with their emotions yet of which they can never be sure in fact!ı think, they liberate the meanings we attach to colors, endeavoring to forge a harmonious link between forms.
when ı look at the work of Ömer Uluç,'abstract composition'ı see some bodies on the picture.they are in different colors.but their tones are ordered in a way.heads are in dark colors, bodies are in light colors.why?ı thought that maybe he tries to give impresion that thoughts are more important then feelings...
yavuz tanyeli,in his work named 'jaz'uses so vivid colors that you can hear the voice of jaz in front of that picture..
and some pictures show us the time shift by their pictures.for ex,'lost horizon',this picture is mostly orange and red colored but there is few blue at the very back of the picture.this makes you feel there is so much time for meeting...
sometimes you can see the mood of the artists on their pictures..like the picture of Mıgırdıç Givanian..he has a picture of 'istanbul'but the picture is so dark colored!you can feel the pessimistic atmosphere of the artist..on the contrary,Nazmi Ziya Güran has another İstanbul picture.it's so lively that you you can imagine a smiling face of the artist..
shortly, there were so much things that appeal our imagination ı think.that museum is the place where the reality ends and illusion begins..thanks for this worthwhile homework:)3231050020

I went to İstanbul modern and visited the exhibition'Bridge6 Photographers in Galata.
Most of the people use language to express the meaning in their minds.however the term language use can be quite vague and not always adequate so,some other components such as 'who uses the language, how why and when' are essential.Such a contextual approach to language is called discorse analyisis and discourse is defined as a socially and culturally system through which paryicular functions are realized(Fasold 1990)Artists in the exhibition also use some sociall and cultural symbols instead of verbal languge to express the meaning because these cultural symbols represents the same ideas for the people in a society. The artists in this exhibition use the Galata bridge to share their beliefs whit people.Bridges can explain many things about a society whit their social life, trade and traffic.Bridges are always seen as a unifying force, however Murat Germen takes it as a divisive force between wealth and powerty. He expresses this meaning by photographing some street signs, shops from both sides of the bridge.Sings from one side represent luxury, elitism, art while the signs from the other side represents traditions, permanence. And in one of his works artist brings together the two sides of the bridge in an inverted arc.By this way he explains his wish of unifying the two sides. As we can see artists explain their thoughts by using some social and cultural aspects(bridge inthis exhibition) which represents the same meaning for people.

3231050102 Bakiye Büşra VURUCUOĞLU I went to Istanbul modern art museum and I willmention about the artist Shrin NESHAT and the work 'the women of the God'.The massage he wants to convey is the wish of the Iranian women for freedom and more social rights. He uses so striking symbols that the same massage would never be conveyed so good with using verbal utterances. For example;he puts a gun into the hands of the Iranian women and this symbol shows their being unhappy with their situation and their wish of more rights. As another symbol he uses Qur'an to display the wrong practices in Iran under the wings of it. as another symbol handcuff is used as an indicator of slavery of women.although the writer uses no words;he conveys his message appropriately by using the socio-cultural situation of Iran and adding some important details which tells the real message wonderfully. So when we look at the paints we can understand that using symbols related with the context we can get the message. we can conclude that if we know about which situation the person mentions and conditions of the time we can communicate with each other verbally or non-verbally.

I went to Istanbul Modern last week. There are a lot of exhibitions in it.And all of them have a great beauty. All of the works reflect their times. And ı see that someone can explain many things in a one picture. For example; The picture on a road to revolotuion drew by Zeki Faik Izer reflects many revolotuions. In fact ıt reflects the revolotuions process of turkey .And I have got the feeling that someone who has a little information about Ottoman Empire and Turkish Republic can understand the meanings which painter want to show us.Motifs of the pictures were drawn carefully and all of them look as ıf they were real.I think by doing this painter want to show us the magnificence of Ottoman Empire. The another work of art was drawn by Michelangelo Pistoletto. In fact ı have not had any idea about this art and no idea about his time, but when I looked at his art,I understood something about his time.So we can say that someone who knows the contex, can understand the thema which has been given by putting together clues in the work of arts.At the and ı can say that If there is a defiency of sentence or language in somewhere,Discourse analyses can help us because;it means study of language about sentence:))

There are lots of ways to express what we have in our mind. The most expressive ways are usually thought to be the verbal or non-verbal language. In Istanbul Modern, I visited the 10th International Biennial, Entre-Polis in which many artists from all over the world express themselves by utilizing not only these two ways of languages, but also with materials (such as lights, posters, mirrors…etc). I want to present the two works that caught my attention the most: House of Realization by Ken Lam, and one of the posters of Jonathan Barnbrook.

The work that influenced me the most was Ken Lam’s “House of Realization”. The Sufi Yunus Emre inspired one of Canada’s leading international artists, Ken Lam. I think that the work has lots of messages in it. It is an architectural installation composed by three corridors. All of the corridors consist huge mirrors expect the last one, the dark chamber. According to me, the corridors symbolize a process of purification from the body, the material values. As we walk through the corridors, the number of the mirrors increases (a huge one along the first corridor, only one in the second corridor). Finally, at the dark chamber there is no light and no mirror. We are alone and we get the chance to “think” and realize that the mirror that we saw in the first corridor is not only the reflection of ourselves but also a unifying screen between the real world (the first corridor) and the inner world (the dark chamber). In my opinion, this chamber is a sort of an end of the process where the human gets rid of his body and realizes that he is the reflection of other human beings, I mean, everybody on the earth are in fact equal. This conclusion leads to Yunus Emre’s humanistic approach.

Jonathan Barnbrook’s posers were very interesting as well. Although the artist used neither verbal nor non-verbal language, there are lots of massages in his posters. The poster on which the Theory of Evolution of human beings is represented mostly affected me. The poster resembles to Darwin’s Evolution Theory. From left to right, the phases that the human beings had are represented chronologically. Finally man turns into a soldier. However, the soldier straightens his gun to human species. With this, the arrow that shows this process of the evolution goes back to the beginning: Man himself is the threat to its existence. He destroys his race. In a way, the artist stresses that the more humans develop and make progress, the wilder and the more dangerous they become. I think that the gun represents the technology that threatens people, in spite of making the life easier and I think there are also a reference and a criticism to the war (USA vs. Iraq) because men destroy other men as it happens in the war of these days.

All in all, I think that both of the artists succeeded to express the meaning that they have in their mind. Yet, if we are familiar to the contextual clues (such as knowing Yunus Emre while observing Ken Lam’s work), we could interpret the artist’s work and the message in it easier.

We can communicate not only by using verbal language but also using non verbal language such as gestures, mimics, sign languages etc.In addition to these people use art as a communication device.Artists can express themselves by using their art talent.By interpreting their productions,we can have an idea of their thoughts, feelings, the mood they are in when producing their works.I visited istanbul modern, and some of the Works of art in this exhibition center can be considered as good examples. The artist Burhan Uygur’ s work ,which is called ‘kapı’,is a construction having four segments and on them some paintings of people which reflect different stages of life.Artist may have wanted to reflect his own life with his work of art.Another artist,Sarkis, has a work of video which strogly captures attention. In the video, the artist tries to form something by brushing with water colour in a container of water but of course he cannot because this work is impossible in water however much he tries. The artist may want to say that substance is temporary. Michelengelo pisteletto’ s work is consisted of a little statue and rags around it.Rags are the things that are thrown away ,which we give no importance. The artist, with his work, can mention us about the ‘unwanted’ around us,which can also be people who are not suitable to the ‘good’ society.another work of art which can especially catch the attention of turkish visitors,by Halil Altındere, a photograph of one million turkish Money .But there is a problem with it.Ataturk ,on this paper, covers his face with his hands apparently being ashamed of this situation of the turhish money,a shame which is made by others.I find this work very very creative I like it very much. Besides,I want to mention about an Iranian woman artist whose photographs of Iranian women are exhibited. The women have arabian writngs on their hands and weapons, the artist shows the harrasment of Iranian women by politicians.Apart from these the artists can also reflect past events in their works. The paintings in the exhibition called from ‘the empire to the republic’ have this kind of aspect.A painting called ‘göreve koş’ by ömer adil, reflects an old man pointing to a turkish map and giving advices to a young man,the event appearently takes place in the independence war. There are many other paintings which show us the difficulties of the independence war, for example Ali Avni Celebi’ s ‘silah arkadaşları’. In this picture a soldier is carrying on his back another soldier who is wounded, the pain they feel is remarkably given in their eyes and this aspect is also existent in other paintings.
We can not interpret anything only looking at these Works. We need some background information,we need to know the context, time, place, the artist, his life etc.to properly analyse the discourse. If there were not any directions about these work of arts,it would be very compelling to interpret.

I visited İstanbul Modern Art Museum. It was a really good experience for me.Here are some artists' and their works' names, and my comments on how they express the meanings they have in their minds without using a verbal or non-verbal language:
Mehmet Güleryüz expresses them by giving an example scene of an event_a moment_ and by showing its components in his work “Handscape(Peace)”.
İbrahim Çallı expresses them by giving an example scene of an event_a moment_ and by showing its important ,striking components in his work “Night Kaid”.
Ali Avni Çelebi expresses them by giving an example scene of an event_a moment_ ,by showing its important components and by reflecting striking feelings in his work “Comrades In Arms”.
Neşat Gürel expresses them by giving a typical,an ordinary example of a person of his type, and by focusing especially on important features of him in his work “Man Earth “.
Neşe Erdek expresses them by giving a typical,an ordinary example of a person of his type, too, in her work “Textile Worker”.
Turgut Zaim expresses them by reflecting feelings of people on faces of them, giving an opportunity to us for finding many similar components together on people and their daily work or activities, and by giving an example of a large scene of a daily event which belongs to a culture, and by focusing on components of it in his work “Nomads At Their Comman Camp”.
İbrahim Çallı expresses them by giving an example of a scene happening naturally, and by reflecting feeling(s) on face of a person experiencing it in his work “Woman Smelling Rose”.
Erol Akyavaş expresses them by giving an example of a scene of an event, and focusing on its important componants, situation and features of these componants by making them too big in his work “The Fall Of The Castle”.
Balkan Naci İslimyeli expresses them by symbolizing two contrary concepts_ignorance with darkness and intellectuality with clearness_ on the same thing_a woman's face in his work “Woman In Black”.
Ömer Uluç expresses them by using colours as symbols of concrete concepts ,or in other words,by abstracting concreteness using colours in his work “Red Bird And These On The Upper Floor”.
Falrelnissa Zeid expresses them by using colours as symbols of abstract concepts,or in other words,by concretizing abstractness using colours in her work “Lost Horizon”.
Ömer Uluç and Abidin Elderoğlu express them by symbolizing concepts with using colours and a few figures, and combining them in an abstract way in their works “Abstract Composition” and “Composition”.
Balkan Naci İslimyeli expresses them by placing a real sitution_travelling around the world_ to an unreal one_standing on water_ in his work “Traveler”.
In “ Ararat Mountain” its artist expresses them by drawing only the real appearance of something.

I have found all these artists and their works successful as I think they have achieved their aims to give or express something to people. And,I feel lucky as I have got some ideas about these artists' works meanings. Also,I have seen and understood one more time that we speak not only with sounds or words,or with our gestures, mimics and with our body language ; we also express meanings by symbolizing, giving examples, focusing on important and striking features or situations, abstracting or concretizing ;all in all,by making use of anything which belongs to nature of human, and which has a function_a meaning in itself.

The exhibition I went to is "BRID6E PHOTOGRAPHERS IN GALATA".The exhibition itself is some kind of a tribute to the Galata Bridge as we can learn from the introduction of the exhibition "the commissioned 6 photographers created new work for this exhibition".But I'm going to mention only 3 of the artists-Merih Akoğul,Cemal Emden,Murat Germen-as they were the ones who could reach me through their work.First;Merih Akoğul's part is called "Dreaming the old bridge" and he expresses his longing by black&white photos. It is pretty obvious that his part is a requiem for the old Bridge.Yet,there is an explanation at the start of his part telling us how much he misses the old Bridge,so even it is plain to see his message,he does explain to the visitors his aim and photos. So it isn't a non-verbal work. Then there is Murat Germen. He represents the Bridge as a divisive rather than a unifying force;showing us the differences between the 2 sides of the Bridge. As part of this idea,he photographs the street signs from both sides which really emphasizes the differences. But to convey the message of peaceful unification,he installs his photos on a long panorama of clouds spread over the floor and walls. So this panorama brings the 2 sides together. So his part and message are also easy to see but it isn't non-verbal either. At the beginning there's an explanation on why he "divides"the 2 sides as the rich and poor. And last but not least there's Cemal Emden's exhibition. And his is a complete non-verbal one.His photos are colorful and full of details as they're really big like Gursky's.His photos are from different angles and they are all showing how beautiful that place is.It's the most optimistic exhibition among the 6,as if the photos are taken for a holiday magazine. He reminds us where we live, how beautiful it is as in daily life we don't actually "see" it.So without saying a single word he can contact us.

WORLD FACTORY in IMC
I especially focused on these works because they are different than all museum's works.

Artist:Davida

I visited museum of Contemporary in collaboration with Davida. Her opus is not ordinary. It is a bridal gown made from shetts and cloth from 'love hotels' in Rio.İt influenced me mostly.Because Davida's catchword is "Don't be ashamed girl. You have a profession." Artist created this to prevent a prostitute to confront the prejudice in the society.Davida is telling a prostitute's real life with the bridal gown on a lifeless manikin. She(manikin) hasn't arms.It means they can't make anything with their arms, only use their bodies.Yes,bridal gown is very white like all girls',but so sloppy.Because their life is already sloppy. They don't live normal, don't have regular life.Over tere are lots of picture about their profession on the bridal gown's skirt. It means yes you can wear bridal gown but always will memories of profession. Then I noticed bridal veil.It is a tulle which is covered with condoms. There is no hair, only this tulle covers manikin's head and neck.Davida wats to show that 'these condoms are your wristlet.'Normally, brides have golds on their necksfor monetary assurnce for them. And condoms are monetary assurance for prostitute, too. At last the bridal gown's tail! It's not tulle or white.Different hotels'names are written on a cloth and added to bridal gown.Because they work in these hotels. This tail shows that your past followa you as a tail.Nobody told this opus. But I understan all of them with my background and of course artist's discourse analysis.İf you have noticed Davida uses prostitutes by non verbal language.Davida is very careful about their gestures and lifes'signs.

Artist:Zhu Jia

I think artist wants to create a concept of "temporary dwelling." His opus is documentary of casual conversations with common citizens in Beijing,China. The photographs cover all wall surfaces of the room with estimated 2000 in number. Also there are one bed,one TV,one plate, but all wall surfaces are covered people's photographs which are old,young,ugly,beautiful,etc..I think it means "You are a person in the society or between all these people, but you are alone in this room. And this room is your world, even if you are poor,rich,etc...Jia only uses problems is to be alone to be demonstrated in psychological conflicts, visually in a different space and time.I understand these people alone.Artist is right. Now,today there is war for petrol, water, you know.Everybody is enemy for everybody. Therefore we are alone.I think it is the best example for discourse meaning.

Art is a special way of expressing feelings, thoughts, etc. It's a good example of communication without speaking. Artists can express themselves in their art works without a verbal language. I went to İstanbul Modern and there were good examples from which we can have ideas of artists' thoughts and the things they intend to say us.

"Rich cat die of heart attack in Chicago" by Fernando Sanchez Castillo was one of the works that I loved much.It was a video and we see the head of a sculpture. It is carried by people but how they carry is worth seeing. It reflects a coup d'etat in Brazil. Because of the censorship, newspapers or televisions couldn't tell about it. Instead the headline was "Rich cat die of heart attack in Chicago". It brings a criticism to that point. There was no speech in the video. This can be reflect the silence in newspapers, etc about the topic.

Another work by Sarkis was very interesting. There was a video and the artist was trying to draw something with a brush on the water.Of course, he couldn't draw it. Maybe it tells us not to spend our lives with meaningless things and without any purpose. It's like drawing on the water. However you try, you cannot manage.

In the photographers in Galata, there was a photograph by Cemal Emden.Galata is shown with allits beauty. There is gloominess, there are no people on the streets. The silence may sembolize the other side of İstanbul. Also there was a photo by Murat Germen. In this photo, there is an advertisement of Vahdet Triko. And there is a sentence at the end "hesabını bilen bizden alır". It shows that people must live with a little money in Turkey. It reflects the economical condition in Turkey.

Another art work was a picture of a Turkisk money. It is 1 million Turkish liras, our previous money. On that work Atatürk covers his face with his hands. As if he was ashamed of the situation of our money. It was a nice work by Halil Altındere.

Also "House of Realization" by Ken Lam was an interesting point of view. In the first corridor, there is a wall on which there are some writings.Opposite to the wall there is a mirror. To read the writing you must turn to the mirror. At the same time you are seen by the people behind the mirror. When you pass the corridors, you are at the other side of the mirror and you realise you have been in vision by the others. It was an interesting work of art..

ı went to istanbul modern art museum..there were lots of exhibitions that some of them were really effective.for example there were a writing on the wall but opposite the wall there was a mirror and you could only read them by looking from the mirror..and the most effective exhibition was the theme founded in 1987 in moscow by Tatiana Arzamasova, Lev Evzovich and Evgeny Svyatsky..without language and with only pictures ıt told lots of things to me..the modern war world and the situations of youth but people are looking like soldiers here.killing and love... everything is together..ı think the future of wars and the world with war is told here.and a message is given to stop wars so as not to be killers in the future.and not to be primitive people.

I visited Istanbul Modern Art Museum. All of the works in the museum of course have many meaningful things.Every work reflects its time and artist's psychology.I will try to say something about MAN EARTH(1974)work of Neşet Günal. In this picture artist emphasise that human came from earth and will go there. The man's body colour and earth colour in the picture show this idea very clearly. We can say this artist believe death. He want to say everyone will die sooner or late. 3231050096

İstanbul Modern has been host also to me last week.It ‘s a huge museum in terms of both its content and structure.I’ve visited almost all the exhibitions, including Biennial;however I’ll mention only about a few Works(each with the main theme Galata Bridge) in BRID6E photograph and ‘İmparatoluktan Cumhuriyet’e: Değişim Döneminde Modernlik’painting exhibitions.
It becomes inevitable not to divulge what you have been concealing in the depths of yourself.Language is of course the most helping factor to convey the exact thoughts and feelings. However, the art is a more effective mean.Like the language itself, the language of art is also fostered by diverse universal elements. For instance,Theodore van Ryselberghe prefers Galata Bridge and presents his impressions of it and that time.If you pay heed to the content of this painting, you can see the Turkish flags anywhere around the bridge;on the canoes, houses and the domes of mosques.Although he didn't belong to our nationality, his work makes your sense of Turkism puffed up.The tourists would most probably derive different meanings from it,though. It also requires a different understanding that how a non-Turkish person can speak such an effective Turkish and expresses this by such a transparent mean!
On the other hand, each of the 6 photographers has shown Galata Bridge from varied points of their objectives.Merih Akoğul,by black and white photos, lays in front of eyes that he can no longer see the colors of the bridge in the past.Murat Germen, represents that although we suppose the bridge has a unifying role,it bears in fact the symbols of disrepancies..You see, main theme is the same both in the painting and photos;but what they have prduced on that topic is not the same. The painter’s tool is his brush and oils;the phtographer’s is camera. They place Galata Bridge in their individual contexts with different underlying factors, notions, messages and expectations..
To be able to interprete any work of art,you had better know in which period the artist lived in,his socio-cultural and personal background.Nothing is coincidental, has its place there accidentally and can be evaluated by abstracting it on its own.The important thing is to know in which conditions it was produced and by which impressions and feelings those sprung up.
In the discourse analysis of language;language use, cognition and interaction are basic elements as well as society, culture, race, age and gender. If a sentence is handled individually and evaluated only by its structural unit, you’ll have a superficial understanding.Likewise, while analyzing a work of art,the preliminaries about the artist should be known to undrstand what the real motives lying in the background of that production are.
Artists convey their individual messages, reflect thougths and beliefs by using the language of varied objects caught by their eyes and that can’t escape their notice. As an utterance keeps diverse meanings in itself,so can’t be evaluated by its own structural sake apart from its context,we need to reach to the insight of the artist and go beyond the seen reflections of it.A profound understanding to be able to see rather than looking is required as the artist makes his language spoken by his art.Otherwise, you’re condemned to be a foreigner to the language of art…

I visited Istanbul Modern art museum and I will try to mention about "Bridge 6" exhibition. There are six photographers who try to convey different ideas on the same topic,Galata,in this exhibition.Among those are the photos of Cemal Emden and Murat Germen that attracted me the most.In one of Cemal Emden's photographs,Galata Bridge seemed to me so peaceful,so natural that reflected the opposite thoughts of that place in my mind. Also,Murat Germen's photo comparing the two sides of the bridge,Pera-Eminönü,gave me a different viewpoint for the functions of bridges. The photographer uses the emblemetic street signs from both sides of the bridge to prove his thought,"the Bridge represents a divisive rather than a unifying force".Looking at the photos,it really worths thinking different styles of lives in Pera and Eminönü.In both of the photos, the topic(the Bridge) and the way to present this topic(taking photo) are the same, but,as we see,Mr.Emden and Mr.Germen choose to present different features of the Bridge. This shows that culture, gender, social factors, mood are the basic factors that affect our expressions.

i went to istanbul modern art museum and visited "time present time past" exhibition and "brid6e galata" photography gallery there.
among many paintings i was impressed by the very appealing one for me:untitled(forever),1999_margherita manzelli.
i asked myself why i stood in front of it longer than the others, and actually couldn't get a reasonable explanation.just a few implications passed through my mind.now,i'll try to make it a bit clearer.at first sight, that work was simply a painting of a middle-aged woman on her knees.however, when you take her into pieces it told so many things.at least it did to me...
manzelli was really successful in putting meanings behind details.but how did she accomplish this?
in the woman's abnormally-opened blue eyes was there her inquisitive outlook.the position she took on the knees conveyed me the impression that she's having hard times.also her shabby clothing and neglected appearance supported this idea, too.in spite of all,she had her hands put together towards her back as if she dared life or the factors which caused the wrinkles on her visage deepen..
finally, the background-foreground colors and shapes are fairly good examples for the artist's expressive means of emotion.the foreground on which the woman was standing was cracked like a desert symbolizing her shaken values, dreams, beliefs or youth..etc.the background had baby blue color and a clear image creating the idea that once in the past she did have good days.
manzelli told me these of all and so on with just a woman image.with just the legendary language of art,or vice versa..i still don't know.

I visited İstanbul Modern Art Museum.Generally speaking, there are a lot of photographs and paintings. In their works, artısts try to empose their idea or talk about their feelings directly or indirectly without using verbal/ non-verbal language. I want to focus on some works whıch deeply effected me. For instance, most of the paintings of İbrahim İbrahim Çallı are related with women(two sısters, prıncess islands woman smelling a rose..etc.)It may stem from painter's falling in love with someone or he may have missed women because of not having women in his life and he may have reflected these feelings in his pictures.
Nuri İyem described people living in village in his work of abstract. There's a man having something on his back and a child is crying. Also there are birds. ıt's an abstract work and I like abstract works much more than the others. Because, ıt's up to you to comment them. Everyone can comment them in a different way according to their feelings.
Faded Costume and Self Portrait by Selma Gürbüz were really interesting. I think they're related with each other; ın the first one, there is a woman with creatures inside her as ıf she was an insiduous person. On the other hand, in the second one there is a woman too but she has a guitar as ıf she was singing and there're creatures on her mouth! I think she has a different character from the woman in the first work. While the first one refclets an insidious woman, the second one reflects a woman who tells her idea, feelings frankly. I think Selma Gürbüz symbolizes people having opposite characters! These two pictures complete each other.
I liked photographs of Jesus by Arnulf Rainer much more than the others. Since its subject is human itself, we can find ourselves in it. It describes how a person changes in time and finally death is unavoidable!
Briefly, ı got some idea about works ,whıch ı've just mentioned above, although artısts didn't use any language! One more thing sir! there was a video in the museum and there was a person who tries to sing on (ıtself)! but ı and my friends couldn't understand (ıts) age!! Is ıt because of art?:)) ıf you answer my question and give ınformation about it ı will be very happyyy thanxxxx:)

It's generally thought that people express the meaning in their mind by using a verbal or nonverbal language. However, this idea isn't adequate because the artists that İ saw in İstanbul Modern are very successful in expressing the meaning in their mind by using art-photographyand paintings-also objects(tulles in the work,Odada by İrfan Omurmen)as a verbal language. For example;the expedition İmparatorluktan Cumhuriyete includes paintings from Ottoman Empire,Independence War and Turkish Republic.I think the most effective paintigis about a war scene-Gece Baskını by İbrahim Çallı-.It has the people from both sides who are crying or shouting but not heard by anyone and trying to beat each other without knowing the reason.Their eyes are wide open with bewilderment, fear and shame. The scene is pointed with dark colors-black and dark blue.I think ıt is more successful in explaining how uneccessary but harmful the war is and how effective ıt is on people than just explaining the casualties and the loses of the sides
Also the expedition has one milllion in big dimension by Halil Altındere.Atatürk in this painting closed his face with his hands not to see the zeros, the sign of the bad economy.I think ıt ıs a good critism for us.The critism becomes harsher by the meaning Atatürk gives to the paintings which has the aim of makimg us think about it.
What is most interesting is that art also express the maening in its mind by using art again. For example, the painting Saygı,Kırmızı ve Sarı ile by Burhan Doğançay has the plain white or gray ground which is torn by the colors-blue red and yellow which havedifferent shapes or length. This makes me think that art should be free different and energic not restricted by dogmas or rules
In sum,People have many choices to express what they have in mind such as panting, photos, objects around us, verbal or nonverbal language, sign languageetc.I think what is imporant is to decide which one is most effective for our purposes

I have visited Istanbul Modern Art Museum.I had chance to see many of
the exhibitions but brid6e galata exhibition affected me most. And i
especially liked 2 photographers' works:
Murat Germen:He shows two sides of Galata Bridge in his
photographs. One side is wealhty and the other side is poor. The works
reflect this division very well.I think Murat Germen uses the bridge
as a symbol to emphasize the discrepancy between wealth and poverty.I
mean the bridge is just a tool for him to express the diversity in
society.

Merih Akoğul:He dreams of the old Galata Bridge in his works. He lets
the colours disappear in these works and this colourlessness is a sign
of his longing for past.Again,as the previous artist,he uses the
bridge just as a tool;what he misses is not only the old days of the
bridge but the old days of Istanbul.I mean,he seeks the past.
For these artists the photos they take are language. You see they are
not just photos of Galata bridge. They are ways of reflecting ideas.

I visited Istanbul Modern Art Museum. The most interesting art work for me is "New Noah's Ark" by Nedko Solakov, a Bulgarian artist. He combines his art with verbal and nonverbal language. In the museum, there is a room allocated for this art work. In that room, there are pictures accompanying with the associated writings to convey some meaning. The writings are drawn from a book because they are numbered like Page 46, Page 70 and so on; however they are not in a sequential order. Namely, the work requires you to fill the gaps between missing pages. Combining the writing with the pictures it refers to, meaning is obtained despite missing pages. There are lots of references to Noah in both pitures and writings. Imperative usage and exclamations inevitably draw attention, meaning that there is some sort of anger or a strict response. But to whom? The world has come to an end because of what we, humans, do: we've polluted the Earth, killed the animals and exploit them for our own pleasures. In the pictures- these pictures are black, which symbolizes a gloomy atmosphere- there are lots of polluted streets and dead fish. Morever, one of the most interesting picture is the one in which there is a sea boat in the street, without any water to float and people are passing on with disillusion. This picture means that we will run of water and have difficult times in a black, that is gloomy, world. Maybe, this is a warning to us in order to gain awareness.
What is more, this room includes a BLACK bathroom where there are lots of colorful PLASTIC creatures. PLASTIC symbolizes that these creatures are no more alive and their being colorful means that they are the representatives of each creature. Color symbolizes different animals. These creatures have come to the bathroom because they needed water. When you are into this batroom, you hear a melody of sea waves which makes you feel you are on the beach or somewhere near the sea.
In short, there is call for a new Noah in the writings that I mentioned above. One of the writings goes as following: "Only Noah can save us." That is why the work's name is "New Noah's Ark"
Finally, to my mind, Solakov gets his message across very succesfully. To admit, he teaches a lesson; you stop for a while and ponder a little and ask the question to yourself: "AM I A REAL DANGER TO THIS WORLD?" because he shows the prospective consequences of our evil actions.

art has been the most common way for human to express their feeling, as anyone on the blog i have gone to İstanbul modern too, there are so many monuments and arts which are revealing one's thoughts and emotion. there is no doubt that Mr. Çallı's paintings are only some of them, no one can look that paintings as if they are pure harmony of color and table, all of them reflects men's feelings and condition of time which they have been created.

for my home-work ı visited İstanbul Modern Art Museum. The arts in which are remembered me that -as everybody knows Mozart is a very famous artist in the world- once Mozart establishes his last musical composition, everybody listens admiringly and it finishes, then one of the listener says "what did you try to say by this tune." Mozart doesn't give any answer and plays the musical composition one more time again, and says that"well,ı wanted to say this." so, like Mozart ı think interpreting the art is really very difficult.
İstanbul Modern Art Museum is very immense and has numerable arts at lots of kinds.one of the most fascinating painting which ı have been effected is Arnuf Rainer's painting, his series of christ overpainting focus on fundamental human failure by using red and black colour lines on the pictures. perfection doesn't get what it deserves in this mortal world is the main idea.ephasizing diferent aspect of existential inadequancy, Arnuf Rainer 's painting renders human reality all too painfully tangible.
the other one ı have been effected is Nejat Günal's painting (Man earth). in the picture seen that yellow and brown colour is dominant and from the appearence of the man understood that he is an Anatolia person who is from the inside of soil. Gunal is tryin to picturize life style and the model of the man of Anatolia.it symbolize that their diligence under hard conditions.
the last one which is deeply effected me is "comrades in war",by Ali Avni Çelebi. there is also the harmony of colour with the mood of scene. used colour is the tone of dark-green,dark yellow and brown and explained in which a soldier is carrying his vounded friend pickaback.this scene symbolize the soul of friendship
as ı said that if we can express every thing verbal there vould be no need for art. that is, art can express what we can not say verbal.so art is much fascinating and necessary for human.art is the style of artist's expressing his ideas.3231050046

As İ visited İstanbul Modern for the second time during this three years, many things had changed there.İ noticed a lot of new art works exhibited. Now ,the upstairs galleries were the so called museum's permanent collection and in the downstairs gallery there were new collections exhibited. When you begin visiting the museum the first thing you notice is Cihat Burak's work "Retrospective".İ did not know about the artist but my turkish friendstold me a little bit about his biography. The exhibition was really a mirror of the process of social and cultural transformation in post-1950s Turkey. Now there was a picture "Nazim Hikmet"that tells his death. The poet is lying on the street with the blood coming out of his mouth.Even from the picture you catch the message the author is trying to give. The poet is judged from the court and in this minutes he is giving his life for his people, the poet is writing the truth.
The Biennials exhibition were also interesting.İ can mention Michelangelo Pistoletto's work "Venus of the Rags".The author was just trying to make people find and see the real identities.Pistoletto began to use rags in a critical time when repressive social stuctures were challenged and one could see the realities beyond the appearance.Another controversial name is the iranian-american artist Shirin Neshat with the work "Women of Allah".There were a series of photos where the author used herself mostly as a model.İn this photos questions as the notion of islamic "martyrdom"and the concept of the radical islam are raised. Also the persian texts written with arabic letters on the women's bodies, the guns in photos are the symbol of politization of women in society. The artist is trying to tell us how women in this society are used for political intentions.
İ want to mention also about the "Contemporary art in the traditional spaces"of Serhat Kiraz. As İ was visiting the museum the first thing İ noticed about this exhibition were four old books placed in separeted tables.İ could not recognize them except one of them which was titled as "İrish Bible".Then we get some infomation about this work and the author was trying to give a message or to tell us something about these books. This were the four holly books of David,Moses,Christ and Mohammed collected together for the first time. The author just opens questions and make the viewer reflect on potential conflicts between the religions.Another exhibition was "Bridge",a series of photos of Galata.İ found interesting the Leonardo Davinci's project about Galata bridge and his letter to sultan Bayazid the second, stating that he is able and willing to construct the desired bridge between İstanbul and Galata. But this design was never excuted.Photos of the old and new bridge give information about the old and new world, changes that happened there, diversity of urban development.
Finally İ want to mention about Anrulf Raine's work "The series of Christ"a collection of paintings with different faces of Christ. The author emphasize different aspects of existential inadequacy.İ can say that all the work exhibited had the value to be seen.Artists used different talents to give people messages abuot how they see the world.Painting, photos tell us about a different world, reallity.Trying to understand them require patience. The artists did not need any verbal language, but they gave messages successfully without using this language. They used feelings, painting, photoes, collection. 3231040107

I visited Istanbul Modern Art Museum last week. There were several exhibitions there; however, the most attractive one for me was Bridge6-Bridge Galata photography gallery. This gallery was exhibiting 6 photographers works about different images of bridge Galata. I have noticede that we can undestand the things or the people by the help of languages invisible factor, I mean in fact non-verbal language tells us a lot of things if we know how to see. As an example, Cemal Emden, Merih Akoul and Murat Germen were the photographers of the exhibition who have achieved to show us their thoughts and feelings by their works of art.
-Merih Akoul was trying to tell us that he longs for the past since his works are black and white. This may be a sign that he is not satisfied with the present situation of the bridge.
-Cemal Emden was using colours too much in his works and we can interpret that he finds peace when he looks at the bridge. His perception about the bridge is positive.
-The other photographer Murat Germen was comparing two sides of the bridge and social life was divided into two parts as affluence and indigence in this way. He actually wanted to have an association.
From all of these, I have got a point that language is not only verbal but also non-verbal.

I went to İstanbul Modern Art museum /The present Time Past.In this museum 2of woork took my attention.First one was‘Istanbul Landscape’ by Nazmi Ziya Güran. In this woek there was one big mosque and around this mosque crowded people. After people there was one modest house. This house was small and 2 floor.Around this house there was two green tree.I think in this picture mosque is the symbol of İstanbul. Most of people knows İstanbul with mosque and after mosque known with crowded. In Picture people face look sad.I think it shows that they tired from crowed of İstanbul and house, tree explains the longing an austere, quite way of life.Because of we also live in İstanbul most of time we want to go or live in silent place.
Second work was ‘Death of Poet’ by Cihat Burak. This work was very interesting and complex. In tahat picture there was a poet recumbet on the ground.Over the poet colourful flowers and beside poet white pigeons.Poet was smiling.I think it shows that his death was good and he was good person.Right side of poet there was kind of people picture. Some people were in prison ,some was independent. One poor woman, one aristocrat woman was together and there was one woman with her child. There was Turkish people and foreign people. The interesting one was on the door there was writing coca-cola.Maybe it refers to how Turkey start to alienate. On the left side of the death poet there was one man with a cat and infront him pigeons.I think in this picture poet was loved from everybody. He address all kind of people.Maybe somebody did not want him and they killed poet and people put flowers over him pigeons shows peace and people want live in peace.

Finally,I visited Istanbul Modern on friday last week. There were many exhibitions including many fine art of works. All of the works were trying to impress the people who visited the exhibition hall. Each artist had an aim to express himself or herself by using non-verbal language and I want to state my impressions about the ones I liked.
---First artwork is "Maskeli ilerliyorum, J'aime Avence Masque"
(I Advance Masked) 1996 by Utku Varlık.
This is a work with opposite feelings, with images recalling innocence and 'an eye' bringing into mind "Satan". These are portrayed together and they gave me a message to good and evil and to humanity... I think that the artist brought together striking details in a masterful way. This lead me to dream worlds or to nightmares. And Also the art reminded me subconscious.
--The other work is autoportrait of Şeker Ahmet Paşa. I looked over his biography at Istanbul Modern and I learned that he studied at Paris. In it, he was standing in front of the canvas and holding his palette.I thought that he tries to display westernized Ottoman, the changed Ottoman artists in that autoportrait.
--And the last work is Silah Arkadaşları (Comrade in Arms) 1937. This work reminded me of Turkish Independece War and the heroism stories of our soldiers. The image was very dramatic and vivid. A soldier was carrying the other wounded soldier-his friend in arms. And I had chance to think again on our great war and the importance of independence, integrity and the nationality concept.
Moreover I think that The bridge Exhibition was really good and attractive. It was really nice to see The galata Tower in different versions and times like that. Most of the artists use the non-verbal language in an attractive way,I think.

In Istanbul modern art museum, there was a portrait which attracted my attention. This was one of Sami Yetik's workings "From the War of Turkish Indepedence".At first sight i could see some corpses of Turkish soldiers and other Turkish soldiers fighting against the enemy. But determination and cool-headedness of the soldiers could be understood from the faces of the soldiers. They were looking like as if they were not feeling anything, all they were thinking about was just "Victory".The artist portrayed this very well, even there was no need to talk and comment on this portray.Because it was telling everything.Thank you for reading.Have a nice day :)

I went to İstanbul Modern Art Museum last week and I was charmed with its beauty. It's a really fascinating museum. Each art work has a secret message.Artists used some symbols to reveal their feelings, thoughts in a non-verbal way instead of verbal language.I realized that people can communicate by means of non-verbal language such as gestures, body language, mimics, too. And via art work, people can convey their feelings to people.
Among the art works,'Bridge 6 Galata Photographs' attracked me the most. There were 6 photographers for the work named Murat Germen,Ahmet Elhan,Ömer Orhun,Orhan Cem Çetin,Merih Akoğul,Cemal Emden. Each of them has expressed their thoughts on the same work but with different point of views. For example, Cemal Emden used non-verbal language. The photos in his works are very colored and full of details. The name of the Merih Akoğul's work is 'Dreaming the old bridge'.The photos are black and white. There is melancholic atmosphere. It's understood that the artist missed the old days.On the other side,Murat Germen used the bridge as a tool while comparing the richness and destitution. He showed the differences between them and then joined them together in a non-verbal way.Among the artists,Murat Germen's works attracked me the most.
All the artists tried to bring together different times on the Galata Bridge in a noverbal way.

language is the device that people use to communicate their thoughts. language does not merely consist of written and spoken versions of it. t includes movements, actions, gestures, postures etc. as well; that is, there are verbal and non-verbal languages. furthermore, every situation demands the use of a particular sort of language. n other words, one cannot use language haphazardly. the conditions, such as relationships, social status, feelings, place, time etc, determine the kind of language to be used. all these conditions create a discourse in which a particular language is used.
from my point of view, photographs, paintings, drawings etc are a kind of written language, too, which create various discourses. n writing, there are these signs which are called letters, punctuation marks etc. these photographs, paintings, drawings etc function just like letters, punctuation marks etc in order to communicate thoughts as well. nonetheless, photographs, paintings, drawings entail interpretation. the messages of these devices are not reflected as flatly as written or spoken languages; hence, a person depends on his/her interpretation so as to understand them pretty well.
visited Istanbul Modern Art Museum. saw lots of works of art. n each of them, the artists try to convey a sort of message. will focus on one of them and try to elaborate and interpret what is aimed to be imparted by it:
my focus is a work of shirin neshat who is an iranian-american artist. n fact, she is from ran and was born in 1957.n her works from her series of "The Women of Allah", she uses images of ranian revolutionary women who were ready to die for their convictions, and she combines a poetic content. neshat left ran in 1979 at the time of the ranian revolution to resume her studies in the usa. yet, she experinced the pre-revolution events in ran. n her work, she refers to the social, cultural, psychological and religious codes of muslim societies and the complexity of certain oppositions, such as man and women. she uses contradictory elements, such as light and dark, black and white, male and female, in order to show the oppositions in societies. of course, her attitude of contrasting things stems from her experiences, particulary in ran. n the majority of the world, women are considered as second-class people. actually, they are ignored. women are forced to bear more load than they can cope with. their thouhts, feelings, importance in life etc are predominantly underestimated. ndeed, women are despised and belittled. shirin neshat tries to reflect these lacks and faults in her works. besides, in her work "The Women of Allah" series, some women hold guns; which, in my opinion, reflects the rebellion of women against constraint, threat, violence, isolation etc. what's more, the figures of women are associated with some pieces of writing, and they are in persian language. even though could not understand what they mean, strongly belive that they are about the lives of women living in ran during the revolution. nevertheless, am in the opinion that what is tried to be told by these pieces of writing is not very different from the lives of many women in this time. the last but not the least, shirin neshat by and large uses dark and black colours in her work, which enhances the impressiveness of the work.

Artists, using their talent(in fact the language of art)crate a mysterious world in which they express their feelings, problems ,joys, griefs, their own truths and beliefs bearing in mind educating ,informing or just enretaining the receiver.Artists use a variety of ways and materials when doing this. Some of them reach their goal with musical instruments, some with their paint brushes, some with their pencils. The exhibition to which I especially paid attention was BRID6E whose artists chose to use their camera to make visible their thoughts. It is a good example of how effective art can be in communicating. The exhibition consists of six sub-exhibitions whose artists have different styles. The unity of the group in fact rests on the difference in artists' styles. The only things they have in comman are the bridge and the idea that it seperates people and lands instead of uniting.Akogul, for example, using the language of photos says the bridge creates tension, even the peole fishing on it don't talk each other.Orhan cem ,also, highlightens the role of the bridge in seperating by using frozen scenes of a dozen of mails which posted from U.S.A to Istanbul(from a american woman to a turkish man). One side of the bridge is european while the other is in turkish style(alaturka). The bridge not belonging to either side seperates lovers. The west and the east can not unite. On the other hand,Omer Orhun is interested in difeerent points of views. He takes photos from both under and over the bridge, trying to show that people pass over the bridge unaware of the irritating under part of it.As I have tried to tell, thanks to god we do not necessarily need oral language to say what we want.

Discourse analysis is defined as concerned with language use beyond the boundaries of a sentence/utterance, concerned with the interrelationships between language and society and as concerned with the interactive or dialogic properties of everyday communication(M. Stubbs). As understood from the definition, language is not just a tool which can be directly understood by writing or speaking. There is something behind it like society, culture, etc. Art is the most explicit evidence of it. Let me give you an exemple of it.
Last week, i visited Istanbul Modern Art Museum. Among several exhibibitions, 'Köprü6' catch my attention mostly. There were six different artists, however, Murat Germen's perspective truly impressed me. Two sides of the bridge, rich&poor. Here the bridge's role is to unify those sides. Right in this point i can explain the discourse analysis. Artist has a feeling that there is a separation between rich and poor. Neverthless, there is something which unify them each other. Artist didn't talk to me or didn't write me to tell it but he sent me a kind of message to convey what he felt by means of his works. Anybody can't see the same thing when they look at the same bridge. It depends on situation, culture or society.

I visited İstanbul Modern Art Museum. There are many interesting works that attracted me.I want to start with the works of Shrin Nestat, called ‘The Women of The God’.With it,the artist tries to show the handicaps ,the women in Iran live into. The image on the painting,in which a women with a black headscarf shows the wish of the Iranien women for more freedom, justice, independence and social rights.what’s more, the gun in the hands of this woman conveys the ignorence she is pushed into as a result of being seen as inferior to man and being deprived of her basic rights. There are also handcuffs which means the social rules the women are forced to obey in terms of clothing. The artist wants the individuals to combine the handcuff with its related terms,as they can symbolize conviction, injustice or obsession.Taking this viev into consideration,we can say that the handcuff may mean the slavery of the woman in terms of clothing, education, social rights(without the usage of verbal or nonverbal language .Apart from this, the artist has put such a meaningful expression on the woman’s face that the anger, pain, bothering and hatred of the Iranien women can be inferred from this expression. Thus, the artist conveys what he tries to explain by using such symbols and images, linking the related terms with each other.
In addition to this, there are the Works of Halil Altındere which adds meaning to the ontology of the banknote without using a verbal language. We know that if a person hides
Himself, then he should be bothered to be in a situation or wants tostay away from it.so,Ataturk’s hiding his face with his two hands shows an act of hiding from a situation external to himself and this demands our consideration of what is being conceded.by this image on the painting, the artist tries to show that money that carries too many ‘0’s is a basic sign referring to the demise of an economic system, and also, functions as a metaphor for the general state of degeneration that accompanies economic dysfunction
Sarkis’s self-portreit(face to face) also reflects the perceptions of the artist in transforming reality into art. What he sees is not just a head with nose, mouth and cheeks. He is endeavouring to interpret his own place in the world through the marks left by life on his face.Instead of observing others,he is now alone with himself. This time it is the facial expressions that helps the artist to reflect his thoughts.
To conclude, the artists convey their deep understanding of the real world into art by using symbols, images, facial expressions or by combining related items with each other, thus enabling the people to infer their own means of understanding and perceive what the artist tries to say from each work of art without using a verbal language.

a visitor from istanbul modern...
ı really liked the way the artist's used when explaining their feelings. ı was thinking that art is a good weapon to mention our beliefs and thoughts.with that exhibition ı agreed my idea again and again.from all the works, two of them espacially effected me.
one is;the work of Shrin NESHAT; THE WOMEN OF GOD.ı understood that the artist wants to mention the hunger of iranian women to get the rigts they should have had.he shows the wishes for freedom by using some symbols like handcuff,qur'an,guns...even if the women were not speaking,he made them tell everything they need...
second work that ı really ashamed looking is,the money that Atatürk closes his eyes by his hands.ı remenbered the facts of turkey.turkey in the time of atatürk,and turkey now!! we had very difficult times especially in economy and we have also. infact that wouldnt be the atatürk who closes his eyes, that would be turks..thanks for letting us thinking a bit...

went to stabnul Modern Art Museum with my friends. There were lots of photoghraps which effected me and thought deeply while looking photograps because they are way of explaning thoughts without any word or signs.we can say this one kind of communication between artists and society.People see their place at society with the way of art. can give exxamples of Bridge Galata photograps. There are social messages at these photographes and lots of details to thnk. We can understand our place where we are at this society.Foreaxample Murat Germen shows us poor and rich people and explain the difference and life style between botth of them.Maybe it is so hard to explain this situation with words but Murat Germen explain with some photographs. So people thnk themselves and their roles at this society. We have chance to see it and thnk deeply. Also Cemal Erdem uses this bridge to explain some thoughts. He give different thought about the bridge. At his photographs life is nice, people are happy and as f there is no problem. Each artist thinks differently and gives different messages.
There was a different work(video) of Sarkis.it is not much but tell us lots of things which are taken lots of papers to explain that situation.Sarkis gives us messages to make useful things and want to give advise not to spend our time with free and needless things. admired it.
Especially the money ( 1 million) was very interesting and thought very much about it.t was wonderful because that awork explain us economical situation of our country. The position Of Atatrk shows us his shame about economic situation of Turkey. There is no verbal thing or other thing and only a photograph gives us lots of messages.it effected me much. admired it.
Shortly we can say that artists explain lots of things with verbally or without it.Thoughts can be reflected with shapes and other devices.

ESRA ASLAN
I visited Istanbul modern art museum.ıt was a good opportunity to see the exhibitions in it.we know that we can communicate not only using verbal language but also using non verbal language such as gestures, mimics, etc.after visiting this museum,I realized that there was not any work without a secret message behind the visible side of it.firstly I want to mention about the work of the Shirin Neshat.Iranian American artist shirin neshat with the work "women of Allah"tries to show us the handicaps of women who live in iran.there were series of photos.concept of radical islam is raised in these photos.at the same time the text was written with the arabic letters on the women's hands.the guns which the women hold in photos are the symbol of the politizations of women in society.the artist is tryıng to tell us hoe women are used for political intensions in this society.we can see women who are ready to do everything for their contry in this photos.
The second most interesting one is"I advanced masked"by Utku Varlık.This is a work which contains opposite feelings. This work recalls us the good and bad feelings in one's mind.In one photo,we see a baby who is made with gold andin another photos we see a statue which is broken.Maybe this work wants to tell us the value of people when they are alive and when they are dead.

People exprss their ideas with verbal or non vebal language. They do it with using mımıcs, gestures, pictures or anything else.
I went to modern art museum and ı saw lots of exhibitions which effects me. There were also some arts which I did not understand anything. Artists reflecets their feelings on canvas. In the museum most of the Works are impressed me but Halil ALTINDERE’s work is the one which impressed me very much. He Works on on turkish liras but there is difference. Ataturk covers his face with his hand. İt is one million turkish liras. Ataturk must be ashamed of this stuations.in fact in this picture Halil Altındere explains his own opinion about turkish economy. Another work of art which affects me is ‘gece basknı’ by İbrahim callı. He is also my townsman and his work impressed me very much. I think this creation explain every thing that we live today. We have had lots of mautries recently so it made me think about wildness that our soldiers meet. Normally ı don’t interested in abstract Picture or composition but while looking at them ı realized that colors tones were different with each other . omer uluc used dark colour for peoples head and light colours for their bodies. I think he wants to impress on ideas rather than appearence. Another thing impressed me is the pictures of jesus. there were about five or six Picture and we saw affairs and wildness on these pictures. This also give us information about chistians believes.
As a result we can explain our ideas with verbal or nonverbal language.artists are the best example for this issue but it also depends on people’s view.

Language can be used to communicate feelings, thoughts and emotions. Humans can convey emotions via screams, gestures, sobs and so on. Moreover, there is another way of conveying feelings, emotions without using a verbal or non-verbal language – artists expound the meanings they have in their minds via their art of works. Their works mirror the era the artist live in and its social, cultural, historical features.
There is an exhibition about Ottoman Empire in Istanbul Modern Art Gallery that I visited for my homework. This exhibition reflects the cultural and social changes on Ottoman Empire. I recognize the changes only when I confront two different portrait of different Sultans, which were made by different artists and in a different time. The portrait of Sultan Selim III made by Konstantin Kapıdaglı mirrors about the early 1800s. Sultan Selim III wears traditional caftan and enthorones. The portrait of Sultan Abdülaziz made by Pierre-Desire Guillement mirrors the late 1800s.It is easily understood the changes in Ottoman empire looking to the dress of Sultan Abdülaziz that is nearly the same as western forms of dress. It is known that Ottoman leaders wanted to adopt the changes in technology without changing the culture at first. However, they soon discovered that cultural and technological change were intimately linked and they took Western cultural forms as example to themselves. Change includes the adoption of such western cultural forms as architecture, dress, and oil painting as it is seen the Portrait of Sultan Abdülaziz.
An artist reflects his traditions to his works. The work of Turgut Zaim named Nomads at their summer camp is one of the example that reflects Turkish traditions and culture. I can see the traditional objects and traditional dress that women and children wear at first sight. For instance, animals like lamb, sheep, camel, etc. are as important as their children for nomads and in the picture the animals are near the children. Moreover, in the picture women prepare meal and girls serve to boys and this shows that in Turkish society there is a patriarchy .
To sum up, without using verbal or non- verbal language people can convey their ideas, feelings to other people also to the next generations and we can approximately understand the meaning in their minds and the features the era and conditions they live in.

I went to Istanbul Modern Art Museum for the homework.First of all, I want to state that all the works in the museum are good examples of expressing the inner world of their artists. If we have a general look at paintings in the museum, I can easily say that every work carries its own meaning ,but some are hidden and some are explicit. And especially these explicit ones have some techniques to express the artist's aim or what he/she wants to say or cry out to viewers carefully and this use of techniques and styles enables us to get the artist' mood or mind. And there can be seen many successful examples of tis. For instance, the oil paint of ibrahim örs "technocrat" is a good example of shade and light composition.this conveys to the painting dynamism and reality. The same is valid for the
"Arm merchant" by Osman Hamdi Bey.I thinh he is the best of this area in the museum.it seems to be so real that you think that you face to face with a real man.another example is that Naile Akıncı's "Eyüp". she shows us the details of the environment we look at every day but we don't see.Especially in abstract works, the artists convey the meaning to the colors.I think even the artists are not sure about what he/she tries to tell to viewers by the choice of those colors scattered onto the paintings.that is ,there is no scientific definiteness.Geometric forms take the most important role in conveying the meaning.Briefly,I absolutely quarentee you that only the ones who try to experss their inner world clearly can be regarded as successful without using verbal or non-verbal language.at least this is valid for me 3231040022

I visited Istanbul Museum of Modern Art and I took pleasure in what I see.Because there was a wonderful, interesting exhibition of paintings. The paintings represent different themes, for example, there were sections such as 'The Sultans','Art Education Abroad','The Beginning of Modernism','City-Social Life','Figure-human body',etc. Also 'Abstract-geometric'paintings were too complicated for me.I understood that abstract works of painters may be grasp by means of great intellect. What artists are seeking is not scientific certainty but the mystery behind being. To illustrate "Homage with Red & Yellow","The arena of the Sun" were very interesting & contained mixed colors. Another section that I paid attention was the part 'The Sultans'.This section consists of works which expresses the time of the Ottoman Empire,Sultans in the Empire,Istanbul landscapes at that time and some rebellions.I liked in this section the work "Geneological Chart of the Ottoman Sultans",1789(Unknown Artist).Because ,the artist was expressing the meaning of his work obviously without using a verbal language. There was a big green tree with small oval portraits of Sultans in it,which the artist actually calls his work Familytree or geneological Chart of the Ottoman Sultans. Therefore there was the chain which is decorated with green leaves & it was tying portraits of the Ottoman Sultans. The Sultans are respectively arranged by the artist. It was showing 33Sultans who came before or after each other, also the artist explains with chain some Sultans' generations, who came after them, for example,as we call MahmudI,MahnudII or III.At the top of the Sultans was Osman Gazi, above his portrait was the moon & under was sword. The moon & sword were only on Osman Gazi's portrait.I think it shows artist's respect for the first Sultan of the Ottoman Empire,& Osman's power as a beginner..Clothes of the Sultans were full of ornaments, medals. Most of them were in red and wear decorating hats. All 33 Sultans and their faces, positions, especially proof shoulders remind us how they were brave, strong & assured.
'City-Social Life' works were also very interesting, there were paintings of today, especially there was well-painted life in Istanbul. Some of them are:"Music shop in tunel","The land where strange things happen".The paintings in this section were the trace reflections of modernity in the city. They focus on the troubles of crowds, making visible the signs that isolate them.Painters witness the menacting & aggressive aspects of the city, its movemen,& invite us into the lives they inhabit.

AYŞEGÜL MİROĞLU 3231050134
FROM ISTANBUL MODERN ART MUSEUM
PIERRE DESIRE GUILLEMET, Portrait of Sultan Abdülaziz
When I look at Sultan's face on the portrait, I see seriousness and determination. The medals on his uniform symbolize his greatness and sublimity. And the sword that he is holding shows that he is also a soldier. In the picture Sultan by taking the Ottoman culture his back turns his face to the west. That half of his back is dark shows something should change. Moreover, the mosque at the back side which is bright shows that their belief isn't affected by the European culture. While his uniform is in European style, embroidery on the carpet is in Ottoman style. One can see the features of two cultures in the same picture.
IVAN KONSTANTINOVIC AYVAZOVSKI (1817-1900) , The Ottoman Fleet in front of the Cırağan Palace
I see a lot of ships, sunset and Cırağan Palace in the picture. That there are lots of different flakes on the fleet show Ottomon is an empire. On the background there are so many mosques that represent the government gives importance to religion. Moreover, this different flakes show that Ottoman is tolerant to other cultures. Seagulls over the sea display Istanbul's general sea landscape. A lot of people is going out from the palace and getting on the ships. This can be a sign of a war. One can see the fleet on the foreground rather than the palace.
AHIIBRM CALLI , Night Raid (1917)
The painful side of a war can be seen on the faces of soldiers in the picture. None of the words can express this situation as this picture reflects. To be able to understand the trueness of this outrage looking into the soldiers' eyes is enough. The dark tone that the painter uses tells us that there is nothing good in a war. That's why we don't see any light colours.
SAMI YETIK , From the Turkish war of Independence , 1933
The spades and the guns show that Turkish public fight with everything they have against the enemies. When we look at the clothes of the soldiers, we can understand that the public also joins the war as soldiers. Beceause some soldiers are in uniforms while some others in civil clothes. What's more, they go on fighting for the country although there are some dead bodies that can be the close friends or brothers of this soldiers. This picture describes the Turkish War of Independence better than words and books.
ERGIN INAN , Human
A human is seen here. Over his head and inside the body, there are some insects. He has three eyes and this shows that he starts to see the world with his third eye. That's, his point of view changes. And the insects represent the ignorance. That we see some Arabian letters whose half is painted tell us he wants to get away from some dogma. There are some small pictures around the body. These are the pictures of what we need in this world like food, telephone, etc. His hands are up and he stands like a person who says 'I am open to everything'.
UTKU VARLIK , Je M'avance Masque' , 1996
In a golden color a baby is seen like an angel. The embryo and the broken statue of a person's face show that life starts before we are born , end before we die and humans change physically during this period. That's, humans wear different masks on their faces in different time periods and continue their lives. And we see embryo and the broken statue in dark tones while we see the baby and the young woman in light tones.
MEHMET GULERYUZ , Notorious, 1990
It represents a man who is lost in darkness beceause of the society. Probably he is notorious in this society and as a result, the society excludes him. That's why when we look at him at first, we don't see him in the picture which is drawn in dark tones.
TURGUT ZAIM , Nomands at their Summer Camp
We see the lifestyles of nomands in a high plateau. Traditional food is seen in the picture. Camels show the nomadic lives of this people as well. While the son is sitting, the daughter is cooking the food. This reflects this peoples' point of view towards boys and girls. There isn't any sign of modernism. Even a small boy drinks his water in a cup.

Ideas and feelings can be expressed with Non-verbal or verbal language. It can be visible in an art work.
I went to Sakıp Sabancı Museum. It is Blind Date time there.Exhibition are examples of Ottoman Hat Art and Modern Art from the world. It is the first exhibition which collects works of internatioanal modern artists and Ottoman Hat artists.I won't comment on HAt.But I have to say that modern art works are the most impressive ones for me.Especially works of Wassily Kandinsky give inner world of artsit.I will comment on his Untitled work. His key word in his works is ''internal necessity''.In order to give inner side of artist he uses social matters which contains contradictions and irregularity.his style of expression is abstract. His art language consists of colors, lines and abstract object which he creates. He doesn't directly gives objects in his works. He creates new objects which don't resemble object in real world. He uses unrelated objects in his works. The most important thing is colors and lines give the meaning of work. For example he uses only colors and color gives chaos of inner world in his untitled work in exhibition.Lines are exact and flat in some part of work but in some part they are uncertain and bent.It gives conradiction in inner part of artist.Geometric forms and lines convey the meaning.
I thank you Mr.Can.Homework gave chance of getting to know Wassily Kaninsky.

oil on canvas
a striking and blood freezing picture! at first sightit seems as if it was a sexual contented painting like any other in that section but a friend of mine made the goodness of interpreting it as foreign force's sexual exploition to turkish women. this wild treatment scenes are seen on the very front stage of work.on the back stage there is a huge fire.but the artist seems to be impressed most by the molesttations as he draws lots of mosques just to indicate the controversy; the culture, beieves of turkish people and unhumanistic, barbarian vandalizm of allied forces.

I visited Istanbul Modern Art Museum last week. While visiting there i once again witnessed that there are many ways in addition langauge to convey meaning. Some use just a palette and colours some just clay and some many other materials that normally seem unnecessary to us.And even if not all of them manage to get their message across they still arouse sth in our minds.
One of the works of art that attracted my attention was "4 Holy Books" by Serhat KiRAZ.With this work which brings 4 of the holy books together for the first time, the artist aims to raise questions in peoples mind that make them think about the potential conflicts between religions.I belive the artist tries to give a message to humanity that althouhg some have been distorted through tthe time, althoug each is written in a different language and sent to diferent masses of people at different times and altough the people who believe in these books are subjects of different reigions they are all the same in essence. And isted of focusing on differences which cause coflicts and gaps people should take the common points and similarities into account.Four holy books each of which is placed in a display cabinet with one empty cabinet situated in the middle and all facing a square surrounded with flourescent lamps seem to support my idea.Although the books are placed in different display cases due to their slight differences, the empty cabinet in the middle most probably symbolizes that they are actually the same in essence.
Another work with which the artist successfully conveys message without utilizing language is the painting "On The Way To Revolution"by Zeki Faik İzer.In this painting the artist tries to depict the innovations to came along with the declaration of the Turkish Republic.Besides,he shows the clash between the two aspects of the Turkish society-the modern section who follow in Atatürk's footsteps and the adherents of the old regime. In my opinion the most striking thing on the picture was an altar smeared with blood, with the year 1923 engraved upon it.This altar seems to be the line separating the two sections of the society. On one side of it is the image of Mustafa Kemal pointing forward.Around him is a group of fashionably dressed people looking and marching towards the direction he is pointing.these peole who symbolize modern Turkey are led by a woman who is carrying a flambeau(symbol of revolution). That the torch is carried by a woman most probably refers to the identity and recognition which women gained with the new regime.A little girl carrying a book with the title "Turkish Language and Literature"and the image of a trodden piece of paper with Arabic writings on it symbolize the transition to the new alphabet.on the other side of the altar, just at the bottom of it is a corpse of a man in a military uniform whom i believe to symbolize the fallen Ottoman Empire(the sultanate).behind the corpse is the image of two men with beard and old clothes who are the representatives of the old regulation. The fearful expression on the mens faces symbolizes the awareness of their impending end.It also symbolizes the universal fear of the bigots from modernization and innovation.

ı went to istanbul modern.ı have to say that it was wonderful what ı saw in there.we express our feelings with words, sentences.but the painters try another way.they expres their own and our feelings, emotions without words in that they use shapes,faces,bodies,cities,lines...everything can be their materials.ı especially pay attention to paints of fahrelnissa zeid.she had a lot of paints there.but three of them have different meannings for me.they are otoportre she painted 3 women but they are different from each other.the first one was painted in 1941 and there was only one woman who is turbaned.the second one was painted in 1944 and the women there hasn't got a turban.and lastly thirs women was with dressing gown.when ı saw these three paints side by side ı think that she is trying to show the changes of women in the social life.maybe she wanted to show that the women of that time didn't want turban and they escape from this restraint and only by looking these paints ı can understand that there are some changes in the society and painter reflects this only by there paints. so if ı can get this idea from these pictures we can say that it is possible for people to express their ideas without using words...

i have been to Istanbul modern museum, and seen the photograph exhbition,i will analyse a photo from Ömer Orhun( sorry i forgot to note down the name of the work): first of all two men drinking in a restaurant can tell a viewer lots of things, you can say they are two close friends and celebrating something, or they waiting for their girlfriends -maybe who are a bit late for the date- , or this is a usual day for them, you can say anything unless you see their faces, and the way they sit. Although we cant possibly know what their trouble is but we can that they are troublesome. Two men drinking might mean lots of different things but two sorry men drinking together can give us the idea that they are drinking to get away from their problems.
On the table there is cigarette box and it is open, also one of the glasses is empty, there are some dead cigarettes in an ashtray which can mean that these two men were sitting there for a while.
Putting these two sorry men in the frame together with two glasses of beer,an ashtray full of dead cigarettes, and an open cigarettes box should have really helped the artist to express his feelings.

There are many ways to express emotions.some people express their emotions by writing, some by speaking.there is a group express by painting.in this way they give lots of messages those cant be expressed by hundreds pages.last week ı visited istanbul modern art museum.in so man works,ı preferred to focus on two works.one of them 'Comrades On Arms'painted by Ali Avni CELEBİ(1904-1993)in 1937.by this work painter focuses on two points.the one is the importence of friendship and the other is by which hard conditions 'REPUBLİC OF TURKEY'founded.'Helping The Wounded'painted by ALİ CEMAL BEYRUTLU(1881-1941)in 1917 is the other work.the point in this work we must pay attention is mercifulness of turks.in this work a turkish soldier helps the one of enemy soldier and gives to him water in spite ofruelness to turks in the WAR OF INDEPENDENCE.we can say this pictures, statues or any objects have a lanuage and they try to express something to us.

(I visited istanbul Modern Art Museum)What do artists have in order to express their ideas or to transfer their messages to the people coming to see their works? This question includes many answers in it.First of all,The facial expression of the figures in the work give you the chance to catch the mood as well as the colours and the light. For instance,How much Jesus suffered While dying is extremely clear in the picture called "The faces of Jesus".Apart form this,Self-portarait of the artists painted by themselves proves us that to examine a face is sufficent to understand what the owner of the face experienced in his life.Secondly,Where the characters are,What they are wearing, what they are doing, who they are with are other questions that should be responded.Thirdly,Nearly all works contain numerous details and objects inside them Which usually seem unrelated to each other. That makes our understanding harder. Then ,we should examine each detail one by one without irritation. Finally,Most of the artists try to add something differrent to the things that you have probably read or seen before So that these issues will be discussed much more. Then it is a bit easy to bring the meaning from your background knowledge. For example,What you perceive When you see the work "The Guardians Of Revolution"(women wearing veil and holding weapon in the picture) depends on if you are interested in the news all around the world.

İstanbul modern
The preferences of the artists while conveying their messages to us are different( videos, paintings, photos, scripts) , but the two artists who I will talk about are very successful at conveying their ideas.

ARNULF RAINER – SERIES OF CHRIST
Human represents an existential shortcoming and this reality is shown in Rainer`s work which renders human reality all too painfully tangible. When I looked at the painting , I saw the revenge of the painter from God.
The thing which is tried by the painter was to kill the Divine in these human figures. The painter wants perfection in human life, but because of God`s creating people with shortcomings hinders to achieve perfection. In the paintings by showing the Christ crucified , he takes revenge of being created with shortcomings.

SARKIS
In the work of Sarkis , he tries to paint a face onto the water, it immediately dissolves , leaving only a trace of colour and the memory of his actions. The artist is revealed as someone engaged in an impossible attempt to make temporary experience permanent. These point to the temporary nature of matter, of memory, an deven of life itself. Rather than mourning this transience, the aesthetic swirls of colour in the water seem to celebrate the presence of each moment. This was the knowledge which I had about this work. The thing which I want to do is to compare the poem “Ode on a Grecian Urn” with this work. This poem also consists of the same subject. The poem gives the idea that art is permanent, and life is temporary. If the important thing is to take pleasure in life , to seize the day ; there is no reason to mourn and the best thing to do is like the swirls of colour to celebrate the presence of each moment.

There was a photo of "Galata Köprüsü" and "Yeni Cami square" taken by Cemal Emden.Galata Kulesi and the opposite side of Istanbul can be seen, too. There are a few people around where we are used to seeing thousands of people bustling.Because it is one of the most important places of Istanbul. The sun is rising in the early hours of morning and it is fogy. The city is waking up an preparing a new and day.One or two hours later there will be thousands of people. What a beautiful city we live in!!

The other thing I wanna say is about the photos of Atilla Durak presented in Tüyap. The exhibition's name is "Kültürel çeşitlilik üzerine yansımalar".There are lots of photos of people from different cultures, which are Ermenian,Laz,Çerkez,Kürt,Roman,Alevi,Şii,Arap,Özbek,Türkmen etc., living in Turkey. All of them are on their own way and happy.I think he tries to tell that all those people live in peace and they are pleased with living together. We can live in peace. That is the message!!It is so easy..

As a first language function, sending messages to others(feelings, ideas, thoughts)can be carried out by many ways.
In photograph exhibition called KÖPRÜ6,it is certainly possible to find the most effective examples of expressing one's own feelings about a special part of a city-bridge and people of this bridge with all their social, cultural hints.
In the works of Merih Akoğul,the first thing you realize is black and white concept as a difference from other artists.I got this difference firstly,as a way of reflecting pessimism. But he needed to add a short writing that can be said "explanatory" to his photographs,it is all about the longing and searching for the past days of bridge. He reflects this longing by the scenes of pedders, children with shoesshine box and by emphasizing calm and uncrowded scenes from the bridge on the contrary to these days.
Murat Germen's works have a really different concept because they are,as a whole, like a strong criticism about the language difference between the two sides of the bridge by the social, cultural and economic effects. He reflects this seperation by means of charts hanging for shops of two sides of the same city.On one side he wanted to show the charts that tried to save its language identity somehow, like "Nimet Abla,Feza Çamaşır"and the most enjoyable one "SWIT 5 YTL".On the other side you can see the charts that are tend to lose language identity, like "Dec Musical Instruments,Bible Society(also social-cultural loss)".By this distance between the two sides of the city,he got the chance of using this "irony" in photos.By sky concept, combining the two sides and a huge eye in the middle of this sky, probably he wanted to give the message of "we keep on living under the same sky, though all those seperation..."
Another way of looking to the city;Ömer Orhun's photographs tell us two faces of this city.Sparkling, sad scenes from the bridge. For example,a couple embracing each other on the bridge,on the other hand a sad man on a ship looking from the window to the unique scene, looking thoughtfully;maybe he wanted to tell there are many who don't enjoy this city's beauties.By emphasizing on the people scenes,faces-sad,happy-he may have tried to say that this beautiful city scenes make some of us happy but the others sad.

I have been to 'İstanbul Modern Art' and ı really enjoyed.. photograph exhibition ''Köprü6'' was great..most commonly artists put together different perspectives of Golden Horn..
For example;'Murat Germen' explained that Golden Horn brings together it's two sides with charts..in one side charts told about real identity and the other side you can see that how identity lost..'Orhan Cem Çetin'express 'forbidden love'series with words and also with photos he combained them together..'Ömer Orhun' unify bridge with people..melancholy-love-chaos and tiredness of people reflects on photos..
To sum up with, photographs tell us good end bad sides of bridge..I think artists really, put forth some private points of well-known bridge..

Artists use their art as a way of communication when they want to convey the ideas in their minds and give messages to the society. While they are trying to achieve their aims, they have any chance of using verbal or non-verbal language.Certainly,it is possible to figure out what they mean in visual arts such as cinema and theatre, but you have to infer the meaning from the drawing and colours in a paint exhibition. For example, I have visited İstanbul Modern Art Museum last week. There were many artists’ works, but I liked most the paintings that take place in ‘FROM OTTOMAN EMPIRE TO TURKISH REPUBLIC’ exhibition. This is the best clue what discourse analysis means, because we know that discourse analysis studies the items beyond the sentence. As the topic of the exhibition is a part of our history, I can feel and understand what the artist try to say.Probably, someone who doesn’t know anything about our history wouldn’t pay attention to meaning.
One of the most effective Works was Ömer Adil’s ‘GÖREVE KOŞ’.A family’s sorrow is clearly seen in this work of art.The artist reflected the language to the eyes of the family and their facial expressions. The artist achieved to convey what he wants to say by means of drawing and colouring.
There is one more work,I have really liked: Turgut Zaim’s ‘YAYLADA YÖRÜKLER/ NOMADS AT THEİR SUMMER CAMP’ provides an opportunity to get the life styles and cultures of the nomads. While looking at this paint, you feel as if you are living with them. All details are given successfully.

I,too, went to istanbul Modern Art Museum.
I should say that I sincerely regret my ignorance of art when I go to such world of wonders totally devoted to art and I truly envy the artists in that they have found a way to interprete the world we live in, beyond the borders of language, ethics, fear or prejudice. They express what they feel without any external interference because they do this with a way that leaves no way for such a thing,by just showing what they see but from their own point of view.It comes to me thay use objective items like fotographs, human faces,or other concrete objects to expeess their subjective point of view,of course in my humble opinion...
what particularly drew my attention in terms of discourse analysis was the work of Halit Akakçe with the name of "arayan bulur, kapıyı çalan buyur edilir"
in his painting on the wall there are two hands holding the bottoms of two strips.Maybe Akakçe,as its name suggests, meant to say "nothing is impossible", but I,at first glance without looking at the explanation, felt that averything is in our hands no matter how complex it is,or it is we who actually makes it so complex...And turning back to our focus, how he does accomplish this, without using a verbal or non verbal language.Of course I won't suggest a new explanation(at least not yet:)but I once more saw that we can communicate and understand each other or at least convey our thoughts and feelings just with making reference to the images that already exist in the minds of all of us..
thanks

Language is the most common way of communication ,and we are expressing our demands ,and expectations also sharing our ideas by the help of language, but there are lots of way of communication.one of them is art.I think art one of the most effective way of it.I went İstanbul modern, and there were a lot of exhibitions.some of theme were special for me :pictures, statue one of them was Babi’s art(1990) it was untitiled.it consisted of black, red, and grey or white ropes.it called a prison up ,because of their shapes.the black was more dominant inside then red came and its outside was wrapped with white or gray.I think this differance can give us a clue about how criminals see outside. the other one was Fahrehissazeid’s art (Tritanoctopus).I think this picture resembled the traffic of İstanbul, because it was crowded and there were lots of colours :red, yellow, green lıke traffic lamps. Also the main colour of picture was black ,so i assumed it as if it had been evening. Finally , i want to mention about the ruin of a statue ,and about the mirror ,which was in front of it,when you looked at the mirror you saw the statue , so it reminded me a word :History repeat itself 3231050006

art is a way of communication because every artwork try to express feelings and ideas.for example;in Bubi's artwork some figure express too many feelings to me.artwork consist of two joining part at first part: in inferior side black sheet then red and the outside white sheet.other part consist of black, red and grey sheet.at first glance it reminds me inside of people and their exterior face.in another perspective it reminds me hypocrisy because, although innerside is black it reflects itself outer white, this is hyprocrisy.other part inner sheet white and outer part is white too,it can be people's conscience i think..the other artworks draw attention of me are ottoman's padishahs pictures.i understood once time again the padishahs's majesty. from istanbul modern 3231050034

language is a system which we want to express our fellings, emotion as a verbal form.of course i take in account language in one respect.we think that there are effect on such as culture, living together as individual..etc.rahter than verbal form of language, there is non-verbal form.that is,in drawing, while looking in sea, panaroma.as soon as we glance at these.we are impressed. Then these non-verbal things turn our mind verbal expressions and they are named in our mind.In istanbul modern when i look at the picture,HÜSEYİN AVNİ,ALLEGORY 1917,I realise that the non-verbal expressions in it are in harmonious. It symbolize the war.after ı world war,the colors of scene are orange,red.perhaps.choosing of these colours make us feel the effect of that time.it may symbolize the fire, bloody time.there is no sun in the scene,no breaches in the tree people are naked, have no dress.everywhere is full of smoke, fog which refers to fire. That is,all of them are harmonious.and another picture which ı am impressed is ÖMER ADİL'CALL THE DUTY 1924'.People's face expressions in that painting are same, they include expressions such as pity, helpless, obligotary to do something but determined glance. There is old man and he gives order his son who has to go war.Perhaps his determined glance give confidence to the family.Behind them, there is a map and i think, this completes the impressions of that bloody time.We refer the only thing we impress or express, want ot say is not limited a verbal form

Another Istanbul Modern Art Museum visitor, I went to Istanbul Modern last week and was deligthed with what I saw. Art is a language for expressing thoughts and emotions. It is used as a way of communication when artists want to represent the emotions and ideas in their mind. They indicate the meaning by using some symbols, images. colour or the wat of drawing and taking pictures. I want to start with Murat Germen. As we know, the Golden Horn unifies the two sides, but the photographs tell us a different thing. The advertisements and names on the signboards from the two sides show that the bridge represents a divisive force and the relation between the two sides which is an apperent discrepancy between the poverty and the wealth. Also in the middle of the sides in the exhibition, there is a panarom of the Golden Horn and I think By means of this view he tries to show the harmonious combination and the role of the bridge as connecting the two sides in an inverted curve. The other artist is Shrin Neshat. When ı saw the photographs, I got the meaning in it immediately. Neshat uses very striking images such as gun, handcuff. Altough there is an explanation about the context near the photographs, you can easily understand the meaning of the symbols conveying the ideas of the artist because of our familiarty with the theme. They tell about the unjust applications against the women. The women's facial expressions show their anger and their wish of justice, freedom and social liberity. The handcuff refers to the social rules determined by men and making them a slave and to the deprivation of equal social rights. The gun İn their hands also may symbolize that they have nothing to lose and can die for their fight. The last work of art I was interested is the one belongs to Neşet Güral(Çocukluğumun Bahçeleri)There are many childeren in the painting, but are they really childeren? I think they are not. Their physical appearence is like an adult though they wear like a child. Their eyses are also weary and as if they had a feeling of longing something and they are too big physically to play at the place freely. Perhabs, by utilizing these images Güral refers to a missing childhood.

Before going to the museum,I did not feel like to go.(to be honest)I heard from my friend,we had to go.I rushed out of yhe home and we went there with my friend. At the beginning of the exhibition,we confronted with pictures reflecting history of İstanbul. There was a picture presenting Ottoman sultans. It was followed by beauties İstanbul.Theye were included mosques, palaces and other beauties. The Fall of the Castle created bye Zekai Ormancı was one of the most effective picture. It was faithful;as if once you closed your eyes and opened again, you could have been there.Following it,Gece Baskını was also quite authentic. There were people shocked cause of a sudden attack. They were helpless, scared because of raid.In addition, there was a picture called "Çocukluğumun Bahçeleri" including a child on the trees eating fruit. It was a great picture especially for reminding childhood."Toprak Adam" was also one of the picture which affected me deeply. In it,there was a man with old clothes and torn shoes. It was as if the way he perceives life was also despondent. There was a series of pictures called "Yüzleşme" quite succesful at inyerpreting meaning of face. They were dazzling. There were further... To conclude,it was marvellous. Thanks

It was a pleasure for me to visit “Istanbul Modern” last Thursday. To me, the most striking art work was “Odada” by Irfan Onurmen. It was the first time that I had ever seen such a wonderful work. It was made of 5 layers of tulle. There was no word, even a drawing or paint. However, the artist used the material so powerfully that you are impressed at the first sight. The shadows of the man and the woman in the room were expressed so skilfully that you could feel yourself watching a scene of a movie.
The other artwork that impressed me was Arnulf Rainer’s “Isa Resimleri”. They reflected the passion of Christ. It was really impressive. The artist’s main point in these paintings is that humanbeing are born with many shortcomings. These deficiencies are inevitable part of our lifes. However, we can learn how to survive with them. Personally, I inferred the fact that people hide their deficiencies instead of accepting them in today’s world. This can lead misunderstandings and chaos as we disregard the human nature. This visit contributed my point of view to human nature.

We visited İstanbul Modern to see the 10th International İstanbul Biennial. The slogan of the biennial was ''Not Only Possible, But Also Necessary: Optimism in the Age of Global War''. Hou Hanru, the curator of the biennial supports the slogan with these words: ''Founded 20 years ago, the Istanbul Biennial should be understood as a part of the modernization project of Turkey in her search for both internal cultural development and international status.''
Sure enough, the works exhibited here were quite appropriate for this thema. The biennial in İstanbul Modern Museum (it is called Antrepo No:3 during biennial days) was composed of two parts, ''Entre-polis'' and ''Dream House''. Dream House attracted our attention more, because there were more various compositions. By courtesy of valuable and creative artists, Dream House was a space for people to come to discover and contempilate the city by night from exceptional angles, a space where they can share their dreams and fantasies. Also there was a common idea among the performers: Contempilation, dream, fantasy and love are indispensable in a fully lived urban life.
We had difficulty in choosing only one of them among such creative works and finally we determined in Justin Bennett's creation which is called ''The Well''. Justin Bennett is an artist working with sound and visual media and The Well is an ear appealed work. The everyday sound of our urban surroundings at every level of detail is the focus of his work where he develops the reciprocity of music and architecture, and sound and image. The Well is an Audio-CD which contains sounds from İstanbul. At the surface of the city with its noises of traffic, music and amplified voices, we put our ear to the ground and descend into the depths of a hidden city. A city of holes, pipes, wells and tunnels, but also layers of history, hidden power structures, clandestine economies, fault lines in the bedrock, the dreams and hopes of its inhabitants.

The materials which were used to record these sounds are:
-a large flag,
-two antique cymbals ‘made in Constantinople’,
-four dreams re-enacted,
-five electric guitars,
-seven walks through the city,
-recordings made inside pipes, tunnels and airshafts,
-many political rallies,
-thirty sellers selling,
-a large number of street musicians,
-thousands of people and other animals,
-uncountable mosques.

Although constructed from sounds recorded in İstanbul, the work is not purely phonographic. It is a personal journey through layers of narrative, memory, sounds and music -an attempt to uncover the secret well that lies deep under the city and we can surely say that the artist is succeeded in expressing the meaning in his mind without using a verbal or non-verbal language.
What can we hear? Sounds to be heard with our eyes closed, or while staring out over the water. Sounds to be heard only in one’s imagination. Sounds to take far away with us...

I wandered İstanbul Modern on Thursday. I have just deal with
Time Present Time Past highlights from 20 years of the international İstanbul biennial. One of them Shirin Neshat's one part of photo series of Women of Allah which she produced between 1993 and 1997 was interesting more. I examined these photos. I have read the information about the photos, and find other photos of this series from the İstanbul Modern library. I research detailed. First of all my first impressions about the photos are; womwn, Islam, the beauty of the women, war, revolution, the desire of Islamic 'martyrdom',feminism, the culture of Arab, and Arabic. the figure of the pistol, black garment of womwn, and the glance of women in the photos were frightening. To tell about my little research about Neshat's photos; After 1990s when she returned to her country, she began questioningthe role of women ın the public sphere under the İslamic regime. In the series Women of Allah she concentrated on the issues of women's body, text and political action. She questions the notion of Islamic 'martyrdom' and explores the conceps of radical Islam and womenhood together. The Persian texts written in Arabic letters on the bodies of the women and the guns seen in the photos symbolize the politization of women within the society. These photos concentrate on the identity of the Muslim women which was formed under the shadow of Islamic powers' politics on "body". Neshat put herself in the place of the women who faught for the Islamic revolutio. She was fascinated by the willingness of these women to sacrifice their freedom and material life for their religion. The lines of writıng on the photos are weses by feminist poets, often written over the parts of the body that are not covered by garments. This series shows poetic and ambiguous images which have been seen as both a feminist indictment and an expression of radical ideas.

I visited “world factory” in IMC.There were lots of projects which took my attention.WQe look at the same things in our daşilt lives but we don’t see the messages of them.So this exhibition helped met o see sensible of them. This exhibition was about globalism, capitalism, poverty.envirnmental pollution etc.But artists don’t give messages directly but by using photosşdesigning something with some objects, videos, interwievs etc.

In the Project of Zha lan there werw a series of photos taken in China. The artist doesn’t use a verbal language but speaks in his photos. The photos werw about China streets, poor people , the difference between poverty and richness. For instance both a Mercedes and a building in ruins exist in the same street.By the cultural development now street archticature changes and people can’t adopt to the difference. All these photos give social, cultural and economical developments of chinese society.
In the Project of Zhu Jia “kazadan çıkışlar” There was a room containing a table, chair ,tablespoon, bed ,television and approximately 2000 photos of chinese people on the whole walls.the photos belong to ordinary people in the streets.I think, the artist says us “you are one of those people .you need these things to live whether you are rich or poor.Don!t be greedy in life and don’t damage people for nothing.”İn the video there were some interwievs of those ordinary people .For example;one of them was with apprentice in a market. The interwievwr asks questions about his special life .for instance “ia Money impertant for wedding?”he says “yes” We can see the major issues of surviving in life by means of video.
The artist Ege berensel “ resimli capital fotoğrafları” .Those photos about capital took my attention. The photos belong to models, casino, modern restaurants, offices, hotel pools, high buildins, metros…Although each of them doesn’t say anything the combination of photos gives the message of “capital”.People became independent of capital we work for only capital. It was a perfect work for giving a social message without using a verbal language.
In Zhau Hao’s work there were interwiews of two women having no husband and workin g in factories. They took videos of their daily lives then show and tell the hard conditions of their lives. One woman Works whole day in the factory to by a building land for quaranteing her children’s lives. The other women does an extra work for earning Money. She prepares meals and sells to factory workers. In the Project the artist uses both verbal and non-verbal language. We can be aware of the hard conditions of worjing class by means of this Project. How and where they work, how factories maket hem work for a little Money and how they yield to them.In my opinion the artist wants to have us not to think only for ourselves but also think about other people’s lives and behave appropriately with the conditions.
In Ursula Biemann’s work there is a video about oil.How it can be produced, how it is transmittedto other countries.I learned that althouh Iran is one of the richest countries having oil people buy it with a ration card in that country.Iran imports most of the oil. When I hear this I was shocked. It was very interesting for me but I am sure that there were lots of political issues besides this.In my opinion the artist tries make us why Iran is in such a position but he does’t say anything directly.
To summarize there were lots of things in htat exhibition .I left with a big pleasure from the exhibitions. All of the Works consist a big ,meaningful and social message for people.I’m sure that our’ point of wiev about the world will develop by these kind of artistic features.

ı visited istanbul modern art museum.i think that it was brilliant thing to went to there.there are many exhibitions including modern experiences, bridge, love and politics...using a verbal and nonverbal language to express our thougts is not the only way.at the istanbul modern art museum,to see the write's way of expressing his thougts and meanings in his minds is wonderful...
the most interesting work that affect me was ''death of poet''.in this picture,we can see the life of poet from babinies to death.i think it is the most intereting as of telling the whole life of poet in one picture...
the other work affecting me was''çocukluğumun bahçeleri''and''man earth''by neşet güral.in this picture the writer showed man as a part of nature...he combines man with earth...what's more he depicted man as three.
it is really charming to tell so many things without using word and language...3231050018

I visited İstanbul Modern Art Museum and i shall start with the fact that art is also a language and if we try to look the poin from this window it will be better for us to convey the problem..well in the museum i could see the paintings ; you know, turning around a topic like 'loneliness' or 'death' these are the example topics for which the artists used the language of the colours and the brush as well as giving them a shape which can introduce us to the meaning in the work..and also in the part individual impressions i could see the interrior look to the scene and expressing it with an hormony of the psychological comment..this stiuation reflects the language which bridges the visitors and the scene..you see the scene with the eyes given by the artist..of couse it is not the same like using the active language, but the works in the museum are also a kind of meaningful reflection, that is language..

BRIDG6E, Photographers in Galata
Two different districts of the same old city.
Two different sides of the same old heap of water.
Yet,beyond all,two different changing faces of the people walking on the same waterway..

Bridges..Some of them are just used to make it easier to get you from one place to another, but others can easily make you sure that they express and explain the whole structure of a city.

Not only is BRIDG6E,Photographers in Galata exhibition supposed to touch on Galata and its neighbourhoods,it also aimed to demonstrate that it is just like a fellow citizen having symbolic and spiritual signifacance in people's lives, along with its historic angle.I think mostly its associations with Istanbul.

If you know even nothing about the city and the bridge, but if you merely know somethings about the language of Turkish, in my opinion the title of the exhibition takes precedence on its own.Bridg6e-in Turkish; Köprü6- is a play on words. Because six(6) references to both the number of the photographers in the exhibition, namely Merih Akoğul,Cemal Emden,Ahmet Elhan,Orhan Cem Çetin,Murat Germen,Ömer Orhun, and "under the bridge"; a kind of illegal field.

However; to catch the sense and the taste of the exhibition, it's required to pass over the bridge at least for one and to feel the influences of the varying living circumstances and the diversity of human development on the area.Especially if you are living in this city in question or if you have lived for any reason once upon a time, these works -for you- reveal more than the different ages of Galata or its architectural features or its multicultural past; it emphasizes you that reality: This bridge, in an incredible way, connects East and West. You then ask yourself with generally open mouths how can just a little bridge over the narrow part of the Golden Horn cut profiles of the people like a knife, with their accent, with their jobs, interests, their appearances, their daily problems, pains or bliss...and it makes you think about your identity with bringing some questions into your mind; who are you, where do you belong to,which side of the bridge are you coming from and going to,and so on..It's just like making a brain storm among the different urban realities.

I've mentioned there are six different photographers.Unless we count the oldest authentic document referred to in a letter by Leonardo Da Vinci to Sultan Beyazıd II in which he solicited building a bridge to join the two shores of the Golden Horn- because when we enter the exhibition, we firstly come across with this letter, drawing reproductions, ancient photographs from the archives of Istanbul Museum of Modern Art and a panorama including Galata Bridge, BRIDG6E is a collecting of six seperate small exhibitions.

And among these 6 outstanding exhibitions, i think the Murat Germen's is the most impressive one.Because different from the all,he thinks that the bridge stresses the differentations rather than being a unifying force. His using of the language of the emblematic street signs demonstrates the paradox between wealth and poverty. While on one side of the bridge, people are dancing in "BABYLON",on the other side ,salesmen are just trying to make people who can rarely afford to buy shop with slogans like "Hesabını bilen bizden alır." And maybe this is the most understandable part of the galery for even the people far away from the knowledge of art.I mean we are always seeing the signs photographed, we just don't realize what kind of world we are living in.

And Murat Germen also uses a panorama of clouds symbolizing the peacefull unification. If you don't want to be included this discrepancy, you can use this inverted heavenly arc as well.

Istanbul Modern Museum

exhibition name:Love and Politics

by Alessandro Pessoli,Caligola(1998-2000)

I see 2houses and a man between the houses. These items and their location remind ne a man who can't make certain decision and judgements. What makes me think it in that way is,as i said, the man in the middle of the 2houses.He is not for a sight or something, just in the middle...

Art & Language is a shifting collaboration among conceptual artists that has undergone many changes since its inception in the late 1960s. Their early work, as well as their journal Art-Language, first published in 1969, is regarded as an important influence on much conceptual art. Throughout the 1970s, Art & Language dealt with questions surrounding art production, and attempted a shift from the conventional "non-Linguistic" forms of art like painting and sculpture to more theoretically based works.
